Setup Guide: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) & Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)

This guide explains how to set up both Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) and Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) for your Middlebury Account.  MFA is used to confirm that you are, in fact, the actual account owner, while SSPR provides a way for you to reset your account password without assistance.

  1. Before you get started, we suggest having your computer/laptop and mobile phone accessible.  (If you do not own a smart phone please call the Helpdesk at 802-443-2200 for assistance.)

  1. Visit http://go.middlebury.edu/mfasetup/ and sign in using your full username@middlebury.edu address and your password.  (FireFox is the recommended browser for MFA setup.)

  1. Click Next to proceed at the More information required prompt.  Prompt for more info

  1. Click Next to configure the Microsoft Authenticator app.  The app is the recommended method for MFA verification.  Follow the on-screen prompts to finish installing and setting up the app. (If the app is not an option for you, see step 5.)

  1. (Optional)   If Microsoft's Authenticator app is not an option for you, select I want to set up a different method. Follow the on-screen prompts to configure an alternate option.  Choose a different method drop-down

  1. Add a Phone number to use as a backup verification option. Text messages and phone call verification are both supported.

  1. Once two methods are configured, click the Done button when prompted.  If you have the MS Authenticator app in place and a phone number then you'll also be able to reset your own password -- your MFA setup is now complete.  If you are not able to use the Authenticator app, please continue to step 8!  Success dialogue window
  2.  For those unable to use Microsoft's Authenticator app, be sure to click + Add Method to add security questions!  This will allow you to do a password reset if you happen to lose access to your phone number.   Security info dialogue window
